Sicily is this beautiful island located in the Mediterranean Sea. There is much to discover on this impressive island. Before you discover a place, it’s nice to know some things about the place so you can talk with the locals about some subjects. In this blog we give 20 fun facts about Sicily.

  1. Sicily has a long history, it’s been inhabited since the Paleolithic era and the island is colonized by the Greek, the Roman, the Arab, the Norman, and much more. Until this day you can walk around and discover Sicily’s past with the many ruins.
  2. The origin of Mafia is in Sicily, it’s also known as Cosa Nostra. The word mafia comes from the Sicilian dialect (Sicilianu) which is spoken in Sicily. The dialect Sicilianu has influences from Arabic, Greek, Catalan, French, and Spanish.
  3. The island is the largest island of the Mediterranean Sea covering around 25,711 square kilometers. Sicily has many smaller islands around its big island like Egadi Islands, Aeolian Islands and Pantelleria.
  4. Mount Etna is located in Sicily and it’s one of the most active volcanoes in the world. It’s also the highest volcano in Europe. Another active volcano is located on the island Stromboli nearby, which is easily accessible by boat from Sicily.
  5. An island with a history, which is still visible in the architecture.
    1. In Palermo you can spot the Norman architecture like at the Norman Palace and the Palatine Chapel.
    2. In Noto, Modica and Ragusa you will be impressed by the Baroque architecture.
    3. The Villa Romana del Casale is the perfect example of some of the best-preserved Roman mosaics.
    4. Valley of the temples is a good preserved ancient Greek archaeological site.
    5. For an ancient Greek theatre, you should visit the Greek theatre in Taormina.
  6. While visiting Sicily, you should stop at some of the stunning beaches like San Vito Lo Capo or Scala dei Turchi.
  7. There is a rich tradition of puppet theatre in Sicily called ‘Opera dei Pupi’ where they make stories of medieval chivalry and adventure. On the island you can find the largest opera house in Italy and one of the largest in Europe called Teatro Massimo in Palermo.
  8. Sicily is known and used for many famous movies like ‘The Godfather’, ‘Cinema Paradiso’, ‘L’Avventura’, ‘Ocean’s Twelve’, ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’, and many more.
  9. The food in Sicily is insanely good, with a lot of flavors. Must try food when in Sicily: arancini, pasta alla Norma, sfincione, panelle, dishes with fish, cannoli, granita, cassata and if you like wine try the Marsala wine. The residents of Sicily have one of the longest lifespans probably because of the Mediterranean diet and lifestyle.
  10.  There is evidence found that the oldest bread in Europe was found in a cave on the island. It would date back from around 6,000 years ago.
